About Van Cleef & Arpels: Part One

Why Van Cleef & Arpels is one of my favorite Jewelry Designers

Van Cleef & Arpels is a French jewelry, watch, and perfume company. It was founded in 1896 by Alfred Van Cleef and his uncle Salomon Arpels in Paris. Driven by a passion for beauty and excellence, this fine jewelry company perpetuates an uniquely recognizable style, rich in creativity, enchantment, color and poetry. Inspired by Nature, Couture and Fantasy, its jewelry and watches throw open the doors to a world of everlasting beauty and excellence. Learn more about their history, here.

Beautiful Butterfly's, flowers, and the four leaf clover are trademarks of VCA’s designed creativity and fine craftsmanship depicting the beauty and harmony in nature. The four-leaf clover shape emblematic of the collection is inspired by Jacques Arpels, who collected four-leaf clovers in his garden and presented them to his staff, along with a poem he had chosen. He meant the gesture as a reminder to be always hopeful!

Fantasy is brought to life in their ballerina and fairy diamond and color gem stone brooches which have a flowing, ethereal feel with such detail and precision.

Patented by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1933, the Mystery Set™ technique remains an emblematic example of the Maison's savoir-faire. The gems are set with no visible mounting or prongs as shown in this ballerina's Ruby tutu. The level of expertise required to make this invisible setting is proficient by a very few master jewelers. The technique is so intricate that producing a single clip can take 300+ hours of work. These pieces are extremely rare and only a few are produced each year.
