Rubies are Red Violets are Blue

The Jubilee Ruby, weighing 15.99 carats, sold for $14.165 million two weeks ago at Christies auction house in NYC. Selling for almost 1 million per carat creating a record selling price for rubies in the United States. Natural Burmese Rubies over 5 cts are extremely rare, especially in this color and quality. Natural (unheated) Burmese rubies are known for their "Pigeon Blood" color and florescence. The sale of this Ruby clearly illustrates that natural Burmese Rubies are The rarest and most expensive colored gemstone in the world.

The Crimson Flame an exceptionally rare Burmese ruby, weighing 15.04 cts, sold for $18.3 million, setting a per carat world record of $1.2 million at Christie’s, Hong Kong this past December.

Transforming ugly rocks into Gemstones…

Ruby and spinel are formed by metamorphic events similar to the conditions that form mountain ranges. Rocks are altered by both regional and local heat and pressure. One such giant earth event occurred when India collided with Asia. The tremendous force of that collision created the Himalaya Mountains and the geological conditions that allowed for the formation of many gemstones, including ruby, sapphire, and spinel.

The country of Myanmar (Burma) is known for the finest quality and most highly valued rubies in the world. Even though both Rubies and Sapphires come from the same mineral known as Corundum, natural sapphires are more commonly found in Sri Lanka and Madagascar.

Approximately, 90% of rubies in the world market come from Myanmar (Burma) and were mined in the Mogok, (Valley of Rubies). Since 2003 our government put a ban on importing Burmese rubies and Jadeite into the United Stated because of the Burmese military Junta and their human rights violations.

Most of the rubies we buy and sell are vintage which ads to the rarity and lack of availability.
